Are you loading clean utensils the sanitary way?

Don’t grab a handful by the eating end straight from the basket. Tip the basket onto a clean towel on the counter, sort by the handles, and put them away touching only the handles.

Load Forks and Spoons Properly

For most traditional dishwasher utensil baskets, forks and spoons should be placed with their handles facing down and their eating surfaces facing up. This arrangement helps expose the surfaces that come into contact with your mouth to the dishwasher’s water spray.

Avoid overcrowding the utensil basket. When forks and spoons are packed too tightly, they can nest together and prevent water and detergent from reaching every surface.

Dishwasher utensils

Real talk: Does your dishwasher actually get your forks clean? 🍴 Handles down, heads up is the move, the cage blocks spray so the eating end needs the most exposure. (My husband disagrees with me on this daily.) Full breakdown on the blog. Tag someone who loads it wrong! 😅

Place Knives Safely in the Dishwasher

Kitchen knife safety is essential when loading and unloading the dishwasher. For traditional utensil baskets, place knives with their handles facing up and their blades pointing down to reduce the risk of accidental cuts.

Always check your dishwasher and knife manufacturer’s recommendations, as loading instructions may vary depending on the utensil design and dishwasher model.

The Part Nobody Talks About: Unloading

Loading correctly only solves half the problem. What happens when the cycle ends matters just as much.

Most people reach into the utensil basket and grab a handful of clean forks and spoons by the end that goes in someone’s mouth. It’s a habit, and it undoes a lot of the point of a careful, hygienic wash.

A better method: tip the entire utensil basket out onto a clean towel on the counter. Sort everything by the handles. Put utensils away touching only the handles, the same way a server would never touch the tines of your fork at a restaurant.

Why This Kind of Detail Matters?

We think about things like this constantly, not because it’s complicated, but because getting the small stuff right is what separates a truly clean home from one that just looks clean. If a dishwasher is loaded and unloaded this carelessly, it’s worth asking what else in the daily routine is getting the same shortcut treatment.

That’s the kind of attention to detail we bring into every home we clean. If you’d rather not think about any of this and just come home to it done right, that’s what we’re here for.
